present system:
Asus A8N-SLI deluxe with two 6600's (128mb each) in sli mode.
power supply 600W. MoBo Bios revision 1015.
AMD 64-3800 CPU. 2Gb RAM.
XP Home with SP2.

used for online multiplayer games, like second life,
and entopia universe, and some CAD.

works fine.

would like to upgrade graphics without having to bother changing anything else,
like bios/power supply/CPU etc.

budget about £100 sterling.

either two cards in sli or one card only.
have looked at various flavours of 8600's/8800's even 9600's (as standalone).

what is community recommendation? nb., in sli mode cards seem close together
and am thinking about dimensions as being possible problem. system runs
at 30C CPU, 35C MB at present, cool and stable, not overclocked.

9600GT in SLI will give you excellent performance gains. You can find these cards on ebay for $50 each. I sold mine for 60$ two weeks ago

Well you need to have the SLI bridge so you can connect both cards together and I am not sure about your motherboard, but you might need to enable SLI in BIOS, just google for it and you'll get plenty of info. Also make sure that your power supply can provide enough current for the two cards.

Cheers
