I built my computer in Jan-Feb 2009. I use a VR 300 for my boot drive, and a Caviar 1TB for storage. Over the past two weeks, I've started to get an issue when booting. At first, I would get an error saying "insert boot media or..."; I would just restart my computer and Windows 7 (64b) would boot normally. The problem started occurring more and more often. I realized that bios was not recognizing my WD VelociRaptor 300, and now happened about 90% of the time. But BIOS would recognize my WD Caviar Black 1TB drive every time. So I switched sata cables, power cables, and sata ports around to see if those were the problem, but they were not. SMART status reveals that everything is okay with the velociraptor drive, but why is it not being recognized by bios?

BIOS settings are auto detect, and enhanced/IDE.

Asus P5Q-PRO
WD VelociRaptor 300
WD Black Caviar 1TB

Please and thank you.

You can't test it, but if it doesn't get detected, then it's defective. I doubt WD will give you a hard time if you want to RMA it.

What is the IDE detect time out? If its 0, you could try other values to see if it resolves the issue. If not, then you'll probably have to RMA the disk.

Thank you for the direct response. Timeout is 35 secs. Do you know of any tests that will verify that the drive is the problem?
