Running 2 external hard drives through laptop

Hello
I need some help here. I am trying to recover information from an external hard drive. There is too much for my laptop so I got myself a Seagate 1tb to put it on but my laptop wont find it. Both hard drives are powered up.
I am running windows xp
Any advise will be very welcome
