External hd won't work

Hello,
the power to my Maxtor 500GB external hard disk is out. Is this a problem with the power unit (AC converter) or the hard drive itself?

As in no lights lighting up on the external enclosure? Does your AC adapter have a "brick" with a light on it? If none of these lights are coming on the AC adapter is faulty. However this doesn't guarantee there is nothing wrong with the drive.
