I have just built a new system, very good specs, everything is fine except my Radeon HD 4870 is running extremely hot, 70+ degrees.. I've attached 2 PCI express cables but I can't see why it's doign this.

If that is the load temp it's fine. Increasing the fan speed wouldn't hurt.

Yep its fine if thats its max load temp. Earlier cards ran nearer 90 before they got the fan control sorted.

Don't worry dude. This is very common. You have to remember this is the highest end GPU ATI currently make. I know it should run cooler but apparently this is normal.

Just a thought... What kind of case do you have? Has it plenty of fans?

I got a Antec 902 so ventilation shouldnt be a problem, it's running at 77 degrees at the moment, fan speed 21% which doesnt seem to change to anything I want it to, activity is 0%... Oh and no this is not load temp, this is with nothing running, at all. :s

If you have the stock cooler (big fan at one end) this is actually normal behaviour, the 4870 will run at that sort of idle temperature unless you set the fanspeed yourself either with Rivatuner or through the Catalyst Control Centre (CCC).
To set the speed: Open the CCC and click on Overdrive. Click on the padlock icon to unlock the Overdrive. Set the fan speed slider to about 35% and then click on the `accept` button. You will hear the fan speed up and see the temperatures drop.

Ahh thats done it, 35% down to 44 degrees. I had 'enable fan control' ticked, but not 'enable overdrive'. Cheers for the help (y)

I do the same on my desktop, I have two profiles one that has a good OC and 35% fan speed and the other is stock with the fan @ 28%.

Having said that I dont think that is something that I should HAVE to do!!! (are you listening ATI, make your damn fan control work better on auto)
