Hi, I'm trying to build a gaming computer and I read that when buying the motherboard, it must be able to support the speed of the CPU. How do I determine the speed of the motherboard and CPU? I've looked through countless specs and can't make heads or tails of it...
Decide on what CPU you want and then select a motherboard that will support it. Most motherboards support a large range of CPUs, e.g., from a P4 to the fastest Core 2 Quad.
I do have a CPU I am looking at but I didn't want to come here like I see other people saying, "I have CPU X, but will it be compatible with motherboard Y?" I want to be able to understand myself what I am looking for in the specs to see if CPU X is compatible with motherboard Y. What do I need to look for and compare?
Once you know what CPU you want, then go to a site like Newegg and search for motherboards that support that type of CPU, e.g., Core 2 Duo, etc. Then you can double-check the manufacturer's site to make sure that your selected CPU actually is supported.
