Interesting question, I'm not sure a PS3 would really benefit from a SSD however. This is just a guess, but I doubt you would notice a difference as several other components of the PS3 would bottleneck the SSD.

The OCZ vertex2 120GB is arguably the fastest 120GB hard drive.. However, it would cost as much as the PS3 unit itself so, not worth it IMO.. I somehow don't feel they will have any positive effect on your gaming experience whether it is online or offline..

Me too dude.. But i do it on a PC which has very many upgrading options.. Anyway, check around if there is some other component worth upgrading first (a nice sound system for that matter).. If you are still keen on upgrading the hard drive only, go ahead with the OCZ 120GB SSD upgrade.. I guess you are aware of the price on that though.. They are quite high..

download time has more to do with internet ISP service than SSD/HDD as it is normally slower. Verys with website and even time of day. I have cox cable and my download times vill very considerably based on the web address. Routing places abig part in this.
The SSD can store the download faster, BUT is limited to download speed.

I notice absolutly no difference in downloads for SSD vs HDD, 3 systems w/SSD.

load file from Storage, yes SSDs normally load faster (key word - normally).

But remember SSDs excel at random small file reads and access time blowing away a Mechanical HDD.
But large files that are sequentially stored on a HDD while still slower they are NOT blown away by SSds.
