ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Motherboard

I am planning to put a new system together. I have not done this for four years so I am completely out of the loop with memory for the newer MBs out there.
I will be starting with a ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Motherboard for a Core i7 920. The problem I have is understanding the 6 memory slots even after reading the online manual from ASUS. According to Newegg the maximum memory for this board is 24MB. According to other sites it is 12MB. Now while I will not need 24MB I want to understand how the 2 sets of 3 memory slots work. How can one site list 24MB for maximum memory and other 12MB for the same ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 MB. What is it I am not understanding?

Thanks.

The actual maximum is 24GB which you could get by installing six 4GB DIMMs. However 4GB DIMMs are nearly impossible to come by right now - the best that you could probably do today is to install six 2GB DIMMs for a total of 12GB.

I suspect that's the source of the varying opinions...
