I have a Directv dish mounted and properly aimed (can get ch.100),
have Sony IRD hooked up to telephone wire and have most recent access
card. This equipment given to me. never tampered with. from previous
DirecTV customer (deactivated account)
I have never subscribed to DirecTV and I would be a new customer.
My question is this, can I simply call their 800 number, give them a
credit card number and vola, get activated? seems I can't do this
online since they want to send me new equipment. don't need it.
Appreciate any response. thank you.

They would probably require a model and/or serial no. off the receiver
to verify there are no outstanding bills on that particular receiver. If
not, then you are probably good to go.
You could also call and ask without giving any personal info.

That's exactly what I did. If you're sitting in front of the receiver
when you call them, read them off the numbers from the receiver and the
card, they can turn it on somewhere between minutes to hours.

The only hard part might be if the guy who gave it to you didn't pay
the bill.

I would take advantage of their free equipment offer and keep the system you
got from a previous subscriber as a back up in the event you have a future
equipment failure.

DirecTV could care less about the equipment, but they will require you to
buy a new access card. It used to be around $35.00. They used to FedEx a new
card with a pre-paid FedEx return for the old card (if you had it), and give
you a $15.00 credit for the old card. If you agreed to a 1 year subscription
they would credit the whole $35.00 back to you. As long as they approve your
credit they will activate the card/receiver in the interim.
