After running some tests using the wattage calculator, and some advice from people here telling me it's enough, my paranoid mind still refuses to be satisfied. I am trying to run an OC 4890 from XFX. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814150368

Power supply is as follows:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Blade111/PSU.jpg

Is on it's way now. It should be here by friday. Here are my other components.

Antec 900 Case (Stock cooling, no extra fans)

3x USB Devices (Logitech G7, Nostromo N52, Logitech G15 *Original type*)
1x Verizon Fios router (irrelevant?)
1x Maxtor external hardrive that is off most of the time.
1x Acer 22" LCD Monitor
1x DVDRW drive
1x SATA(?) Hardrive. 250.1GB Model : WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0
Inter(R) Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 (3.0 Ghz)
4x Gigs of patriot ram (I cant remember the type, sorry.)
1x MSI P35 Platinum Combo LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard

and of course, the coming addition to my

1x XFX ati 4890

Is my supply really sufficient for this setup? What happens if the power supply isn't good enough; can it damage my components?

I think you need a bit more PSU because it says 230w for the whole system which runs off 12v, so 150w for the 4890, that leaves you with 80w, 65w for the processor, 15w left, 40w for the motherboard, you're out of watts.

28Amps on the 12 V rails is low for the 4890. Maybe the 4850, but low for the 4890

Oh boy, I wish I had done more research before grabbing the 4890 then... Anyone else have something to add? I was told by several other people that I "Should be fine".

Ill put it this way. It may run, if the PSU is brand new, but after awhile, itll crash, and could bring other componants with it when it does

So, what would you suggest I get to replace my old PSU? Something I was considering doing at first until I was told by people on this forum that I should be ok with this?

I was considering THIS before I was told I didn't need it.

a high-end 500w will do the job, just make sure it has dual 6 pin power connectors, or 8pin and 6pin if you have one of the 1ghz cards.

I was told ultra is a mid grade brand, also; the PSU is years old. I think it's about 3-4 years old at this point. I bought it during one of fry's more famous deals (it was free after the rebate).

^5 +1 what the Forum Master said.

First, the psu in the photo is an Ultra V Series 500 watt power supply. The +12 volt rail is rated at 28 amps. Not exactly a high quality, high performance psu.

Second, an ATI Radeon HD 4890 (1GB) video card uses about 285 watts at full load according to the Tom's hardware review of the card:

http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 62-13.html

Third, here are links to technical reviews of the Ultra power supply:

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/465/1/

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/for [...] eview.html

A high quality power supply in the 500 to 500 watt range can easily handle any single video card made. However, based on the power requirements of the 4890 video card and the technical reviews of the Ultra power supply, I would recommend purchasing a brand new high quality power supply.

EDIT - Although Corsair has a solid reputation for high quality power supplies, the TX 750 is overkill for your system. The TX 750 was designed for use with mutiple video cards in dual SLI or dual Crossfire mode. All you really need for your system is the Corsair VX550. It has a single large +12 volt rail rated at 41 amps. It can handle any single video card made and quite a few mutiple card configurations:

Not a bad price on that PSU, but tell me; wouldnt it be worth it to just pay the 20 dollars extra to be prepared for any future overclocking I might do to my processor?

Here's a link to a technical review of the Corsair VX550:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.p [...] ry&reid=62

Overclocking is not an issue. A high quality 500 to 550 watt psu can handle an overclocked quad-core cpu. Your cpu requirements are lower. The real issue would be using one video card versus using mutiple video cards. If multiple, power hungry, high end video cards are in your future plans, then go ahead and spend the extra $20.00.

Thanks a lot for the help, I don't really plan (or have the wallet... or patience) to deal with any SLI / crossfire in the future. I'll go ahead and grab the 550w on ebay and hope that I've gotten good advice this time, though looking at the review; it is difficult to refute any words said here.

ebay? A brand new one costs more on ebay:

Here's a better deal at buy.com - $88.74 and shipping is free. There's also a rebate for $20.00:

Did I actually type in ebay? Im sorry, Ive been trying to sell my refurbished 8800GT, so I probably typed that without realizing it.

I use newegg for all of my electronics.

Hm, with the buy.com 30 dollars off, and the mail in rebate, the PSU would be a real bargain, unfortunately, Im pretty sure Im not eligible for the 30 dollars off being that I have the Amazon iteration already. Still, it's a good deal... If you dont mind getting a visa cash card thing.

Also, does the 550VX have two 6 pin connectors? On the specifications it lists a 6 pin PCI-E and a 6+2pin PCI-E (Whatever thats supposed to mean).

theAnimal - GEEZ! Darn charts and articles are confusing. Some measure just the video card and some measure the entire system at the wall socket. No set standard. It's bad enough I am growing old disgracefully.

Shadar0 - Yes, the VX550 has two six pin connectors. That 6+2 pin can be used as either a six pin connector or an eight pin connector. No problem.

I see, I should have figured as much; but I guess it's good to be on the safe side.

Well, I'll be picking this PSU up; hopefully, I wont get a dud.

I have one more quick question before I buy, sorry.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139005

I found a 650w corsair for one dollar cheaper than the 550VX I was linked earlier. Would this be a good idea?

It looks good. @52 amps on the 12V rail, itll handle everything you could possibly do to your rig, like ocing, adding other components etc

The reviews seemed favorable as well, as it's (apparently) a higher quality Seasonic build.

Thanks a lot for the help.
