[Power Supply] 4890, others have told me this PSU is fine...

After running some tests using the wattage calculator, and some advice from people here telling me it's enough, my paranoid mind still refuses to be satisfied. I am trying to run an OC 4890 from XFX. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814150368

1x Maxtor external hardrive that is off most of the time.

4x Gigs of patriot ram (I cant remember the type, sorry.)

Is my supply really sufficient for this setup? What happens if the power supply isn't good enough; can it damage my components?

28Amps on the 12 V rails is low for the 4890. Maybe the 4850, but low for the 4890

Ill put it this way. It may run, if the PSU is brand new, but after awhile, itll crash, and could bring other componants with it when it does

a high-end 500w will do the job, just make sure it has dual 6 pin power connectors, or 8pin and 6pin if you have one of the 1ghz cards.

First, the psu in the photo is an Ultra V Series 500 watt power supply. The +12 volt rail is rated at 28 amps. Not exactly a high quality, high performance psu.

Second, an ATI Radeon HD 4890 (1GB) video card uses about 285 watts at full load according to the Tom's hardware review of the card:

A high quality power supply in the 500 to 500 watt range can easily handle any single video card made. However, based on the power requirements of the 4890 video card and the technical reviews of the Ultra power supply, I would recommend purchasing a brand new high quality power supply.

EDIT - Although Corsair has a solid reputation for high quality power supplies, the TX 750 is overkill for your system. The TX 750 was designed for use with mutiple video cards in dual SLI or dual Crossfire mode. All you really need for your system is the Corsair VX550. It has a single large +12 volt rail rated at 41 amps. It can handle any single video card made and quite a few mutiple card configurations:

Overclocking is not an issue. A high quality 500 to 550 watt psu can handle an overclocked quad-core cpu. Your cpu requirements are lower. The real issue would be using one video card versus using mutiple video cards. If multiple, power hungry, high end video cards are in your future plans, then go ahead and spend the extra $20.00.

Hm, with the buy.com 30 dollars off, and the mail in rebate, the PSU would be a real bargain, unfortunately, Im pretty sure Im not eligible for the 30 dollars off being that I have the Amazon iteration already. Still, it's a good deal... If you dont mind getting a visa cash card thing.

Also, does the 550VX have two 6 pin connectors? On the specifications it lists a 6 pin PCI-E and a 6+2pin PCI-E (Whatever thats supposed to mean).

It looks good. @52 amps on the 12V rail, itll handle everything you could possibly do to your rig, like ocing, adding other components etc
