The Core2Duo shouldn't bottleneck your graphics card. The only thing you would need to worry about is what games you are going to be playing. lol
Its not that cards and processors arent compatible, its that a old CPU will make you games not perform as good as they should, even with a good graphics card.
They are definitely compatible but what are the rest of your specs? Depending on your resolution a 4850 or 4830 may make more sense considering your cpu. If you are at 1650x1050 or lower a 4870 may be a bit much.
On a 19" screen you will pretty much be able to play all games at the highest settings with a 4870 and most dual core cpu's.
It's better to have a phenom II and an ATI graphics card because of stuff like AMD fusion and Overdrive, but it'll be more than fine with an intel as well.
With Crysis at that resolution I think a 4870 will just about be playable with no AF and no AA enabled. Of course it depends on your version of whats playable. My version is 25fps or greater.

Which C2D? They cover quite a range.
My setup (with the 4870) would play Crysis all high DX9 fine at 1920x1200 without AA/AF, if you have a E6600 or better, I see no reason why you could not play that game a maximum settings on a 19" screen.
ive been looking phenomII and here where i live they are quite expensive..
besides, i dont know which mobo to get that doesnt go off the budget and goes with the phenomII..
the CORE2DUO i was thinking was the E7400.. but would a Intel Quad be better? like for expample, the Q8200?
maybe i could get a similar video card..like a 9800gtx+ for example
