If one were planning to play today's popular games @ 1280x1024 would it be advisable to upgrade from subject-mentioned card to something contemporary (from nVidia only). ...or is the 8800GTX enough for that resolution and today's popular games?
Course keep in mind, once you get a monitor that does 1920x1200 or higher, you'll then want a newer graphics card. (lol that's what happened to me anyhow)
It's enough for 1280x1024 in most games. Crysis will bog it down though if you put the settings above high. If you have an SLi board and you feel your system is sluggish in some games then you may want to consider getting a second card to run in SLi. Still that 8800GTX should be enough to play games at least at medium settings at 1280x1024 until the DX11 cards come out latter this year.

Even crysis won't bog down on an 8800GTX at 1280x1024. The res isn't high enough. You can't push any significant AA, but all settings on very high is easily doable.
That system should not be sluggish on a single current game, aside from something CPU bound. Not at that resolution.

I played crysis on an x2 5400+ and my 8800 gts at that resolution on my 17 inch monitor and it's actually quite smooth, forget all this fps junk, the fps might be low on paper and the game still plays ok.
