Hp keyboard with dell computers

Trying to use a HP keyboard on a Dell Optiplex 330 computer. Connecting using a PS/2 plug with USB adapter to USB port on back of computer. When turning computer on lights on keyboard flash, but computer says keyboard not found, nothing on keyboard functions and screen goes to Windows XP, press control alt delete to begin. Is this setup compatible with this computer?

Hi. Have a look in the bios to see if Legacy USB is enabled

some keyboard and mouse do not work with the simple USB to PS/2 adapter.
