im thinking on getting a hd 4850 with an intel chipset..

how or where do i know which mobos support crossfire?

Motherboards with Intel chipsets P35 or later with 2 x PCI Express x16 slots
P35
P45
X38
X48
X58
Only the (X) prefix chips sets will run both slots(cards) at x16.

Look at the UD3P Gigabyte.

If it says 2 x16 on a p45, usually means its 1 card at x16 and the other at x8. x16 is full bandwidth on the pci-e slot, x8 would be half the bandwidth but, since is xfire, it wouldn't hurt the performance.
