I thought I would build my first computer because my dell is way outta date. I figured 1K would get me more than enuff until I went crazy. Reading all these articals about the new technology my stupid a$$ just went out and bought a 280.00 mobo (asus p6t deluxe). How did that happen? and were does it end?! I got me a new antec TP 750 blue for 125.00. An antec 900 case for 100.00. A 25.00 lite on 22x smart erase dvd reader/writer because I'm so budget minded. WD 1tb black 135.00...yeah I over paid, but WHY NOT?! I saved so much on the DVD writer. I am looking at OCZ Gold DIMM 6GB, Zalman cooler, ATI 4870 and finally the CPU, I7 920. I just saw this CPU in Micro Center for 199.00 "Boxed"
My question is what does the term "boxed" mean? and should a broke "Noob" buy it?

If my wife finds out that I spent more on this than I did for her wedding ring, I'll be eating out of the trash for months.

Suggestions and/or donations please.

boxed, means it's a retail boxed processor. OEM processors do not come packaged in a box.

Thx Sir,

I thought 199.00 for a I7 920 wasn't right some how. I will be at Micro center @ 9:59 am.

Part of the sale, is they are pushing out their i7 920 C0 stock, to make room for the newer D0 models.

Also, Microcenter probably plan on a huge holiday weekend in regards to sales. If you can get them in for a i7 @$199, they might just need a board, CPU cooler, etc with it.

Thanks again,

You have been so helpful. I read that the D0 holds a great advantage in gaming but not much of an advantage in applications.

My wife busted me reserving my CPU...so I gotta go to bed now, I'm being audited in the morning. I betcha that ring thing comes up!

Just wanted to say you got some good parts going here, but did you leave your balls at the alter?

ROFL!! You just made my day :) .

To the OP: The D0 stepping runs a bit cooler than the C0 stepping (lower voltage at stock frequency) and you have more overclocking potential with it. If you don't plan to oc past 3.8 ~ 4GHz, then don't worry about it, the C0 will do just fine. And that P6T mobo is excellent, although a bit expensive. Just tell the wife a bigger ring is in the works :) .

Thanks, 4GHz is great and besides its to late now. I picked up the CPU today. What do you think about the Xigamax Dark Knight or should I go with the Zalman? I didn't read any reviews on the Zalman. What about the stock fan, is it worth anything at 3.8 GHz?

And the ring she requested is going to cost me about 6 years of my life...or at least that's what she believes. I know a place where I can get a great Cubic Zarconia. She'll never know the difference and with the money I'll save I can buy myself a Hyundai.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all your help.

Go with the Dark Knight but remember to get the bracket.
