Hello,

I would like to have a Home Server in my house to organize all of my cluttered files that are scattered about my network. I was looking at the HP MediaSmart Home Servers and although they are very nice, they seem quite expensive for what they have to offer. Over $500 for 512MB of RAM and a Celeron? I was considering building a server. Popular Mechanics has already suggested this and it can be a pretty cheap process. So, I was wondering if you, the Tom's Hardware community can take a look over what I have in mind and bring forth any suggestions or ideas about this potential setup. I would like to keep the entire build under $500.00

Additionally I will not be needing as much storage as I would have thought, but I still need about 500GB worth so that is still plenty of files.

I am looking at a way to possibly drop the price tag by around $50. I am going to need a aftermarket cooler because aparently the E5200 is horrible and it will be running for long periods of time.

I think your spec is about right .

The only comments I would make are that the hard drives seem a little small , and that the mb doesnt have RAID so you cant make a RAID 1 for data security .

I think I read somewhere that WHS can just use two drives and duplicate one as a back up automatically so that might not matter if you use it as the OS .

I am considering this as a NAS unit

Not too different from what you're looking at, but I have two larger HDs. I was not planning RAID but more straight file back up (on top of file backups already in place in each computer) and sharing over my home network. I picked the case and motherboard for their ability to expand to more drives as I need them. The PSU also has enough connectors for additional SATA drives. I think the case is smaller than the one you picked too. $395 before shipping, etc.

Since this machine will be on a lot, I've chosen low-power parts. This is similar to a rig I just built that I keep on 24/7 as a Teamspeak server. Since I didn't need the storage, I'm using a smaller drive, and the 5050e was out of stock when I built mine, so I used a 4850e.
This doesn't include a KB, mouse, or OS, but adding those shouldn't break the budget.

Oh, and you could go cheaper too, using a 780G mobo, a 2300e CPU, and 1GB of RAM. This build, however, does have some potential to be useful for other things, which I figured was worth the price.
