k i am stuck here i want the best video card that is around 400$ the cheaper the better. i am going to be playing crysis and call of duty on a 24' screen max resolution. i was going to go with the gtx 285. but have learned that the 9800 gx2 is way more powerful for half the price

help would be apprecaited :)

9800gx2 has driver issues and what not since its dual gpu, id stick with a gtx 280 and not the 285.

The 9800GX2 isnt WAY more powerful, but at that resolution im sure it beats up on the GTX 285. However the card is hard to find nowadays, its not even sold on Newegg anymore.

These X2 cards dont hang around long.

you think the 4850x2 would be able to handle crysis ?
i will consider the gtx 280 as i can probally overclock it too match the gtx 285

Dont touch the 4850X2. That's a strict warning.

so its the gtx 280 or the 285 ?

what do you think i should choose

i see you have the 285 how do you like it how does it match up to the 280

GTX 285 is worth the extra $30. The XFX model is $330 on newegg. So far I love it, its alot more smooth and stable than the 4850 crossfire setup it replaced.

i don't know what the rest of your hardware os but I play crysis with an over clocked GTX260 and don't have any problems @16x10. A 280 or 285 should be fine............... 9800gtx = JUNK ! Doesn't have the memory ( 256 ) to handle tough games. 256 + 256 does NOT = 512.

He was thinking about getting a 9800GX2, not a GTX which has 512mb. The GX2 has 1GB (512 per).

$400:
1. triple 9800GTXs/GTX+/GTX250 SLi
2. triple 4850s Xfire (is this supported?)
3. two GTX260s or two 4870s
4. 1 GTX295 or 1 4870x2

i guess i will stick with the gtx 285 for now and if i need the more power i will sell it and get a 4890 when they come out :)

Anything wrong with the 4870 x2 sapphire 2gb at $399.99 with a m-i-r + free shipping?

March 19, 2009 12:07:26 PM

gtx 285/4870 x2 either is good.

Still take ati over nvidia IMO.

Yeah, with prices dropping on 4870, you could get two hd4870 1gb cards for sub $400.
I have one hd4870 1gb and I run COD 4 maxed at 1920x1080 smooth as baby's butt. Now for Crysis I run it at 1980x1080 but with no AA and at Gamers Settings. My frames stay in the 42fps range.
