Hi,

I was just browsing through PC cases, and realized that I could substitute metal racks (which are much cheaper) instead of buying a case.

Anyone got better ideas?

You don't "need" a case at all, it is perfectly plausible to run it without any at all, the only thing is that it leaves your components vulnerable to.... human error (stares at drink)

+1 what spuddyt said. You can run it without a case, you just need to be extra careful

No case = fail, to easy to damage. Spend $20 on a junk one is money is a issue.

Hmm...
Okay, so as long as I do no physical damage to the components, it should be alright then? (Well, I think I'll just buy some nets to cover the thing)
I was more worried about dust particles and electricity safety issues using the racks...

The problem isn't dust pareticles or electricity. Voltages aren't high enough. The problem is physical safety of the components.

primarily to test components before I install them in a case. But I do install them in a case.

You may run into difficulty when turning it on as you will have to fiddle with jumpers and a screwdriver, unless you rig up some sort of switch. I really wouldn't recommend not using some sort of case, especially if your investing quite abit of money into some nice kit, you might as well buy even a cheap case and leave the side off if you plan on hotswapping etc.

you could put a roof over the rack! it could be a fun project. I like it.
