I have installed a 512 memory stick in my old HP. It only shows to accept 256 of it. How can I change the settings to accept the remainder.

If it only supports 256 MB modules, then you can do absolutely nothing to get 512 MB modules to work. Did you check the specs for your system? If 512 MB modules should work, did you buy modules that are compatible?

Yep, if it only shows half of the sticks capacity, you have bought the wrong kind of memory.
