Good morning all. I'm looking at getting the Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920 and was wondering if it's necessary that I get the 3.0 GHz or if it didn't really matter anymore. Thanks in advance. Ryan

no it isn't necessary since the i7 is already such a powerful CPU with 8 threads and somewhere around 4-5 IPC.

^ fanboy, i7 is FTW if you have the money, in fact over here the difference between a decent FX/X58, 955 vs 920 D0 build is £20.

Because the i7 can overclock SO easily then you may as well, doesn't cost anything and can possibly get to 3.0 on stock fan.

^ I wouldn't be surprised if you could get 3.5ghz with a D0 on stock fan if you have a good case.

i7 920 user here.

Mine is air cooled Monsoon Vigor III, 3.8Ghz with NO voltage mods, north of 4.2Ghz with voltage boost. Its the old chip to not D0. Those i7's are totally unbeatable no matter how much you pimp your AMD it can't hang. I mated mine with with a pair 295GTX's and 12GB (upgraded since I made my sig) of dominator memory. Sorry AMD, you don't have anything that comes close to that on air.

You don't need the higher priced model unless you go for the unlocked extreme version otherwise not worth the cost because the 920 delivers tons of performance as is.
