Best OS for Q9550?

As the topic line asks, what 64 bit OS would run the Q9550 the best?

Since Microsoft has released Windows 7 as an RC, I am going to run the Windows 7 64
bit till I can save up enough money to buy my OS what ever that might be.

But I would like to know what OS will be best optimized to run the Q9950!
XP 64 bit? Vista 64 bit?

This new build is fast! I got myself the Q9550, 4 gigs ram (want to get 8 hence the 64 bit)
and the PN5-D all worked. Had to barrow my brothers GPU as my Mobo has
no on board video. waiting on the rest of my stuff to arrive GPU, new PSU case etc.
So I am still using my Slow P4. but I could see the difference big time... was nice.

More about : q9550

Win 7 64 bit does not use more than 3.25GB of RAM, stick with Vista 64.

What? Are you saying a 64 bit OS doesn't support more than 4GB of RAM? Am I understanding you right. Maybe you meant 32 bit Windows 7, not 64?

No, you read correct.

That doesn't seem right.

It's the latest RC dl'd direct from MS, and unless it's just an issue with the 'evaluation' copy I for one will not be shelling out my hard earned cash for it.

Seeing as Windows 7 appears to be a new and improved version of Vista, I can't see the RAM limits being too much different. I run 64bit Vista and if I'm not mistaken, Home Premium can detect a maximum of 16GB of RAM. With even X58 boards with 6 RAM slots, that still is a maximum of 12GB. I'm sure the issue will be addressed before it is released to the public.

I'll have to wait and see on that, but I do hope it's just an 'RC' thing because other than that it's not a bad OS and it does seem 'snappier' than Vista and I've already grown quite fond of the new taskbar.

It has nothing to do with win 7, it has to do with your specific setup of win 7 (motherboard perhaps?). My win 7 install works perfectly with all 12 gigs of RAM (RC build 7100 x64)

Just enable "Memory Remap" in your BIOS. Otherwise, refresh your WEI scores.

No such option, and refreshing the score does bugger all.

I'm not sure what problems you're having bro, but I've not had a single problem with memory mapping in Win7 since the early beta's. I'm now on RC, and my OS sees my full 12 gb.

The only 'problem' is 3.25 gig out of four being used by the system.

That's strange, mouse. What's your mobo?

That's interesting, m/b should support 8GB. Try putting in more RAM to see if it goes up when more Ram is added. If it stays the same then there is adressing problem for more then 4GB. If it goes up then it it's because some of the memory is reserved for something else. Is that 8400GS with turbocache by any chance that would explain part of system memory being used for turbocache.

mouse,

Start -> Run -> MSCONFIG -> Boot -> Advanced options... -> Maximum memory = Checkbox must be unchecked. If that's already the case, check it and set the value to 4096. Should be fine then. The "Memory Remap" BIOS option would immediately solve this, but it seems that, for some reason, your board really lacks the feature. I have found many threads about this problem with this board. Vista x64 runs OK with your config, but Windows XP x64 and Windows 7 x64 don't, apparently.

That was the first thing I looked at but it makes no difference, but thanks for your input.

Runs fine with P35 chipset. I have Gigabyte EP35-DS3P. If I remember correctly it supports 16GB or at least 8GB. I have 6GB running without issues. Could be down to Your specific motherbnoard. Have you tried updating BIOS?

A BIOS update is not possible due to Abit's demise as far as motherboards are concerned. :(

has to be setting dude i am able to use my full 4GB of ram. windows 7 would be a good choice if you can't afford an OS right now. you can download win7 for free and it will be good for a year

Which setting would that be then?
