XD Card Problem

Hello,
I was downloading pictures from an XD card when an error message came up. now the file appears with no datat. When i put the card back in the camera it says XD write protect. Can i override the XD write protect and can the pictures be retrieved?

sometimes there is a locking mechanism on the card itself, a tiny little thing which u push across like on the old floppy disks to write protect. double check that. sometimes it can move over time.
