the mb is ecs M863. I verified that the max capacity is 2 giga, but not sure about the speed, this site http://www.memoryx.net/pcchm8mome27.html says ddr400 and this site http://www.cmicomputer.com/cgi/quikstore.cgi?store=&search=yes&detail=yes&product=mbcdlu34&category=motherboard&keywords=&hits_seen=&page=search.html&and=&affiliate_id= says ddr333. which one is the right one?

thanks for the the tips but I'll probably won't upgrade it, buying 2 sticks of 1 giga costs 130$ here while new buying faster sticks of the same capacity but higher speed costs half of it...
now I need to wait and see what the owner of the computer will decide...

You can probably get DDR2 for a fraction of the price, however just to be clear it will not fit in the board you mention. For that board you need 'DDR1' - which is the DDR ram, and that only came in PC2100, PC2700 and PC3200 flavours, I.e 266, 333 and 400Mhz. DDR2-800Mhz RAM won't go in that board.
So your only other option is to do a complete upgrade of the Mobo, CPU and RAM
