I have just installed a XFX Geforce 9400 graphic card and the box stated that it requires a minimum of 300 watts

(not sure whether it is for the PSU or the power needed)

My PSU is 450 watt

my motherboard requires 400 watt

So I want to ask whether I need to change the PSU or not.

I want serius answers!!!

Well, I can't tell you for certain without more details about what's in your system, but based on what you posted about your video card and mainboard power requirements, along with the assumption that there is more stuff inside your case that needs power too, I would be very surprised if 450W were enough to power all of the innards of your PC.

Also, what's the amperage on your current PSU's 12V rail? This is the part of your PSU that your video card will draw power from, so it is very important that it meet the specific requirements of your card.

Yes a 450 watt psu will run that card no problem. when it says it needs a 300 watt psu it is talking about the entire system. a 9400 maybe uses 50 watts max on under full load.

Huh, guess that shows how much I (don't) know. Oh well, at least I least I learned something new. =)
