Let me start by saying it's been quite some time since I put together a computer. My current one is almost 4 years old, so I'm pretty out of touch with the latest and greatest.

In general I'm looking to put together something that I can use for everything from Crysis to WoW. I don't need to run everything on high at max resolution, although that would be nice.

The last time I did this there was a huge price drop by going down one step (or two) from top of the line, the $600 video cards were 5% faster than the $250 ones. I'm hoping that is still the case.

Anyway, I have some of the peripherals: monitor, mouse, keyboard, OS, DVD burner, speakers/headset

Technically speaking, I have the old XP install, I guess I'd need to find the 64 version or else try out vista.

My old case/PSU will be staying with my old computer for a tv-server, so I need to replace those.

I'm not too picky about sound and don't need wireless (you'd think it would go without saying, but you see people playing online games over wireless /shudder). I don't need a ton of storage space, this will be primarily for gaming, not file sharing or any other illicit activities.

Basically I'm looking for everything else, and I'd prefer that the mobo/chip come as a pre-assembled combo since it's been a while since I've done that and had one bad experience (and two fine) with it in the past.

My budget is ~$1000 USD.

Thanks in advance for any advice

I started a very similar thread this morning. Look for the thread titled 'Noob needs advice'. The links are working there.

Edit: disregard.

That's my bad on the links. I'm currently at work, and so when I pieced together that build, I was just quickly cutting from Newegg. I even apologized about not taking the time to code the links. If you have any trouble finding the parts, please ask, and I'm sure someone here will explain whatever garbled mess I made referred to.

What resolution are you going to be playing at?

I would up the PSU to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009&Tpk=850tx

And change the GPU to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161265

Generally with the dual-GPU cards, there isnt the best driver support, and they dont scale as well as the single GPU cards. With the UD3P mobo you can crossfire two HD4870s down the road and have awesome performance in games.

Other than that, techwizard has created a great build for you.

Thanks for the thoughts, I'll take an in depth look at this tomorrow in the AM (EST) most likely, so I might have some more questions then.

Just going to repost the links I was using so there is a working copy in the thread:

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703009

Heat Sink: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003
Thermal Compound: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100012
Bracket: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233019
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231209
Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102809

I guess my main question is regarding the sizing of the video card and PSU in the case. I suppose someone has used both in the given case, but I was unable to find any reviews specifically mentioning those two pieces inside the antec 300. Just wanted to confirm that it would fit as the case

Also, I'm assuming mounting the chip and heatsink won't be any more or less complicated than it was last time I did it.

Thanks for the help, really appreciate it
