I am looking at either getting an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor or an Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor, which would be better for a gaming computer? The intel is 219$ on newegg and the AMD is only 245$, so i didn't know if the AMD would be very much better than the intel.
I'm finding $280 on the Egg - if you have a promo code give it up ...
You need to set a budget and give us some more details (like gaming resolution). For the most part it will be hard to top a PhII 720BE combo in bang-4-buckage performance.
some of the D0 i7's get past 4.6ghz, the 955's will be lucky to get to 4.3ghz and you also lose 4 threads and it has a lower IPC with the 955's.
He said 'harder to overclock' not that it would OC better. Can you even break 4.0Ghz on air with i7? <--(Not trying to flame, I just know they run hot)

depends, if you are only gaming, then go for the AMD and save some money for your GPU, if you do other cpu intensive tasks like video editing, get the i7 and might have to step down the GPU because of price

The best quad for gaming for the dollar is the P2 940. The P2 955 is the next best thing but its priced a bit high right now because it just came out. i7 is fast, but for gaming it's not much faster than the P2 940
If gaming is the most important thing, you cant go wrong with the P2.
