Hello,
my Matshita DVD-RAM UI 850S ATA device for a Sony Viao VGN-N220E keeps malfunctioning. It displays a disk as if it is blank. It has done this several times and each time I have to uninstall the driver then reboot the computer to make it reinstall the driver, then the CD works perfectly again. Is there a permanent fix for this?

Check for a firmware update on the drive, and a BIOS update for the Sony.
