Got a problem with my 4870x2, I'm a huge XP fan but the lack of directx10 and win XP only detecting 1 gb of visual ram kinda forced me to upgrade to either vista or Windows 7 milestone 1 beta (Not really recomended, I know).
Now I'm wondering why DXdiag and the 'can you run it?' website only detects 1.7 gb of visual ram...
My specs are:
Pentium D 945 3.4GhZ running @ 3.9GhZ
Asus P5q3 Deluxe
2GB DDR3 @ 1600 (stock)
ATI HD 4870x2
Some kind of 150GB SATA HDD and 500GB USB EHDD
SAmsung superwritemaster DVD-reader/burner SATA
As strangestrar so arrogantly said, your video card has 2GB of RAM, but only 1GB is addressable. You have 1GB per GPU, but you don't have 2GB availabe. Each GPU needs to have exclusive access to 1GB, and one memory bank is an exact memory of the other.
So, although you do have 2 GB on your card, only 1GB is available as free and usable RAM for applications.
Don't worry, 1 GB is PLENTY, and you have not been deceived - you're just misinformed.
Your symptoms are perfectly normal - your card is running just fine.
