How do I get windows xp to recognize a new sata 2 5 inch harddrive

I have recentley installed a samsung 400gb 2.5 inch SATA hard drive in my HP Pavillion 1000dv laptop. When I run the disk scan it passes on the quick and comprehensive test but when I boot from system recovery it gets to the screen asking if I need to install full or repair etc.

Upon asking to install the full xp it then say's it does'nt find any hard drive.

Am I missing something here?

  1. It may be that the version of XP you are using/installing is not updated to the stage where it can recognise the drive. You may have to slipstream Service Pack 2 or even Service Pack 3 into an XP Installation setup.
  2. How is that done. Can i download a sp3 copy onto usb and boot that first?
  3. Your computer may come with SATA drivers that you can load from floppy disk when the XP install disk asks you to load 3rd party drivers by hitting the F6 key. But I imagine that your laptop does not have a floppy disk drive. Alternatively you can try setting your SATA controller to IDE mode in the BIOS.
