Depends on your motherboard. AMD and ATI are a part of the same company, so they probably go together better. But you can pair an AMD cpu with either ATI or Nvidia GPUs.

that's what i always say, but really i don't think it makes much of a difference. either manufacturer's cards will work fine, just choose the one that has the better value/performance for you.

I like ATI with AMD chipset and if you are are going AM2+ or AM3 type of motherboarsd, they have AM3 motherboard on the market place now, and ATI 4870 are pretty reasonable price now.
But one last question, Crossfire can only be used if the game can support it?
That'll be a bummer if most games can't support.
I always thought it could be used for almost anything. lol.
^ Well, most games nowadays support Crossfire and SLi.
Even if you're playing an older game that doesn't support 2 or more cards in Xfire/SLi, it doesn't really matter since a single 4850 is still a powerful card that is more than enough to max out most games.
(the 2nd card in non-SLi/Xfire games is sometimes used as a physics engine)
doesn't matter, as you wouldn't pick a nvidia chipset for a phenom II cpu anyway, so no software complications there, if that's what was worrying you..
