Problem samsung dvd writer connecting to acer aspire

Hello, my daughter has purchased a Samsung External DVD writer/reader for her Acer Aspire running Vista but it cannot be read by the Aspire. It works fine with my Samsung N310 netbook running XP. She bought the Aspire in Spain. Is this a possible issue?
Any suggestions much appreciated. Dave F

Could the regional settings on the ODD are for Europe and hers are for US. You can check the region code by opening windows explorer, selecting the ODD, right-click on properties, select the DVD Region.
