Yes you can still run XP on all platforms, however 32 bit operating systems will not take full advantage of 4+ gbs of RAM.

For a "semi-mid" budget Intel quad, you should look into the Q8200 or, alternatively, see how a Phenom II 940/920 fits. You might be be able to eek out a Q9400 but the Phenom is cheaper and/or faster.

A Q9550 will only fit within your budget at the expense of a decent video card, or other components. I would go for a Q8200 or a Phenom II.

yes windows xp supports quads.

here is a list I came up

I have not included windows xp. I suggest getting hold of 64bit edition to take usage of all 4gigs of ram.

$120 for those extra 2 inches seems like a lot. But yeah the 790GX's onboard video saves you a few bills, I was gonna mention that. A case+psu combo could be a good idea, but it'll be trouble if you decide to upgrade your video card down the line.

i023l, please can you put your bit in a new thread, then we can deal with one thing at once, thanks.

Acer 24" looks expensive, we pay less than that in the UK, and the US prices are always lower than ours.

Screen is dependant on usage,
- Games are going to need a more powerful GPU to run nicely at 24" high res, probably out of budget with a quad core CPU. Maybe a 22" would be better.
- Designing really wants a big screen. Which you can achieve as long as you don't want to game to hard.

You will have to decide on a comprimise solution.

Another thought - are design program using CUDA? Might sway graphics towards an NVidia solution to make use of extra feature.
