470, 5870 or other?

Need a new video card as my 4870X2 just died.

For the price, the 470 seems great. Eventually I can get a second one and have more performance than I had with my old card. The only thing that worries me is the heat and noise.

Through it's entire life, the 4870X2 ran up to 95c when playing games, 50c idle (50% fan speed always on, pretty loud). While I can live with similar temps and noise, I would like to start migrating to something a little quieter (this is a gaming and media PC in my living room).

I could always throw in some sound dampening material if there are large performance hits or if it is a huge premium to get a cooler card.

Based on the performance, the 460 seems to fall much shorter than the 470 based on my current card (4870X2). The heat and power consumption is a lot better though.

Current rig is an e8400 OC-3.6GHz, 8GB ram, corsair 1000w, asus p5q deluxe, xonar 1.3. Run in 1920x1080 on a 52" lcd.

Within the next couple months, possibly even this month, I will be upgrading to an i7 (so new mobo and ram). Also wanting a new case so it would be a good opportunity to look for something built for sound dampening.

Yeah, was planning on doing SLI. Thanks for the info on the next Intel line. Still though, being so far off I think I will just upgrade now.

I purchased a 460 and 470 to compare side by side. However, I am not even going to open the 460 because the 470 is well within my tolerable noise range. After the 4807X2, I doubt there is a card that can sound as loud.

Thanks for the help all!

I was just suggesting to stay away from a single 460 because that would be a noticeable step down....just like I mentioned

he might buy a second card so sitting with a 460 vs the original 4870x2 would be a step down by a noticeable margin.

as you guy's mentioned SLI 460's beats the 480 ...I read that review

and in the end SLI 470's would be a much better step up than 2 460's from the 4870x2

They are just giving their opinion on the best bang for bucks. Ofcourse 470sli would do better than 460sli x.x
It's like comparing 470sli to 480sli.

Not at all what I was saying but yes

OP is buying 1 card maybe buying one later buying 1 460 now and one later is not going to be worth it........... the end

Well, that's for the further input all.

I actually decided to build a whole new rig. The current 470 is staying in this rig and will be my fiances computer.

I have purchased everything for the new computer accept the graphic cards as I am not in a situation trying to decide between 2x470's or 2x480's. Either configuration would also include an 8800GT that I already have (dedicated physx).

Everyone that has replied to my delima has suggested I go with 470's because they are cheaper and cooler plus exactly what I need for 1920x1080.

The only reason I hesitate going with 470's is because I am technically running two monitors. DVI-HDMI to my TV @ 1920x1080 and DVI-HDMI to my Xonar card for bitstreaming which then connects to a Denon AVR. It is necessary to have to separate connections because I get horrible mouse lag when actually watching what is being rendered through the Denon AVR. Audio comes through fine, the video only lags with the computer. Audio is in sync when running through the AVR and TV separately.

In the nVida control panel it sees the Denon AVR as a second monitor and if I disable it I lose audio because the Xonar card requires a live connection.

The only thing I dont know is if this is putting additional strain on the card and if so how much? Also whether it is better to be cloned or independent displays.
