My friend got this Gateway LX awhile ago and he was wondering if the motherboard will work with a phenom II 920. The motherboard has a phenom I 9500 right now. The cerial number on the motherboard is no where to be found and it seems to be a pretty basic motherboard. Does anyone know the generic motherboard that comes with the Gateway LX desktop? And if so, is it compatible with a phenom II 920?

RS780 isn't the model number. it is the AMD chipset 780G aka RS780.

Best way to know is to ask Gateway or check this one. http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/INTEL/m00286/4000286su2.shtml

Check if it has bios updates for the new Phenom chips.

I have the AMD Phenom II 720 X3 at 95watts running fast on mine as I'm writing this. LX6200 With most stock componants. Notica NH-U9B CPU cooler, LG Blu-ray player and 120mm rear case fan all system temps stay under 40c at a full load. Need to update my bios, still showing unknown AMD CPU. But let me tell you what a difference, blazing fast and no video/audio jitters anymore. I'm running HTPC with 32" visio on HDMI. Writing this and surfing while watching media center in small window. CPU still doesn't pass 50% use when watching Blu-ray and doing these same things. Don't know if it can handle 125Watts or I'd have a 955 X4 in it.
