what is the fastest processor i can put in my HP DV1000 notebook. doing simple upgrades to try to improve. someone told me that the 478 will not work.(pin set is offset by one) i am currently using a celeron m 1.5ghz.

Are you sure you have a Celeron 1.5 Ghz instead of a Pentium M 715?

You're most likely limited to the fastest CPU that was available for that notebook which seems to be the Pentium M Processor 745 (1.8 GHz). The fastest FSB 400 MHz is the 765: http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/chart/pentium_m.htm. Only HP can confirm if the BIOS supports it.

Look through the BIOS revison history, if new CPU support was added through BIOS it would be in the release notes of the BIOS update. Otherwise as somebody already said you can go with the highest chip available for that machine. However given the age, the CPU update may not really be all that worth while.

However I have upgraded from a T5550 to a T7700 in a DV9458 before and it was a nice jump from 1.66Ghz to 2.4Ghz.
