Hi all. I am looking to rebuild 2 boxes for someone in my family. Their old boxes were:

■HP Pavilion (6635) - 533MHz Celeron - 64MB RAM, 10GB HDD
■Dell Diminsions (sp) 2400 - 2.6Ghz Celeron - 128MB PC2700 RAM, 40GB HDD

The first isn't worth upgrading IMO, and the second, can only be upgraded by adding up to 2GB of RAM. So, I am looking for the following:

■A stable, inexpensive machine which can be slow-ish because I think this would be their budget net/kids box. (target $$$ - ~$400)
■A solid, but still cheap machine that will be their main box. (target $$$ - >$800.)

The prices are just a guide, cheaper is better on the 1st, and the 2nd...more of a bang for the buck machine. No GPUs/cases are needed. I mainly need an idea on processor/mobo/RAM and want to get this done for them for as little as is passable.

So for the first box, you can reuse the old cases if they have no problem...but you might want to consider getting a new case for the other one (I assume the old systems will be canablized?)

Better rig:
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119152
mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128381
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103471
Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231209
DVD Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136152
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

So that will be a pretty decent rig base from an AMD standpoint, if you wanted intel, then you could go with these swapped in. It will be more expensive, but perform better than the AMD build and last longer:
CPU and mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.160551

Both of those configurations should come in under budget I think.

So what cases and GPU's will you be using on these rigs?

Hopefully you have OS for the cheap rig, if you don't then that cuts the budget to $300 which is almost impossible to make a worthwhile build for that much. You can still fit an OS in the more expensive build if you went with the AMD setup, or with the intel setup using whatever case you would use and not that CM case.

Cases and GPU's, I am least worried about...though still I don't know.

Thanks for the hard work you put into that, it really helps out a lot!!

Also, I have both old PC's XP discs and codes.
