I have DTV HD, using the Samsung box. I watch 4:3 programming in its
original format, using the black bars at the sides. I don't like to see it
stretched.

I was looking at the Samsung remote and opened up the slide-door at the
bottom of it which revealed several buttons, so I started messing with them
a little. The "Format" button changes the picture from full to panorama to
pillar box and a few others. The "Res" button translates the interlacing to
either Native formats (Native 1, Native 2 or Native 3), or a fixed
interlacing format such as 1080i, etc.

So here's my problem -- after changing around some format and res options, I
find that the black bars now taking up a bit more real estate on the screen,
rendering 4:3 pictures to be smaller than before. In addition, the DTV
messaging at the top now conforms to the format, either 4:3 or 16:9, instead
of defaulting always to 16:9, which I liked better. Finally, now it takes a
lot, a lot longer to change channels, especially going from HD channels to
standard channels, now visibly showing you the motions it goes through to
make the res changes.

When I go to an HD channel that's not showing an HD program, the black bars
are the size they were before -- it's on the non-HD channels that the black
bars now take up more real estate.

My issue is that I can't get it back to the way it was. I've tried every
combination between the "Format and "Res" buttons and none of them are
making it the way it was before.

Is anyone familiar with what I'm talking about and can help? Do you know
what the defaults for these buttons are supposed to be? The Samsung user
manual doesn't say.

Thanks for your help.

Chuck

Did you change anything on your TV while you were hitting buttons?

Are you using the same Output Connection you were using before (component or
RGB, etc)?

Pages 16-18 have all the different picture formats you can get, depending on
your monitor. It basically depends on what you like. I think Pillar Box is
default, with Component (YPbPr) and guessing 1080i. If you use one of the
Native modes, the output will change depending on the signal source, which
takes some time. I normally leave mine set on 1080i since my TV won't do
720 and I don't like waiting for it to change.
