Trusted Platform Module and Windows Vista

I have a very good laptop manufactured before the TPM mainboard chip. With Vista Ultimate installed, I cannot use the 'bitlocker' technology. There is some literature on a virtual TPM. Not sure if it can be leveraged in this case and whether there is a preferred virtual TPM. Guidance sought.
