I7 Discontinued - Still worth buying?

I'm completely new to building PC's but decided to build one for university next year. No rush for purchase so spent the last few weeks researching and had an i7 centred build in my head.

Checking the forums yesterday though I found it's being discontinued (http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2009/05/28/intel-to-discontinue-core-i7-920-940-cpus/1)

So,

1. Simply, should I still buy it?
2. Will the 1366 socket/i7 mobo's become obselete?
3. If its worth buying should I snap one up quickly before they run out?

Thanks in advance for answers. I've only just created this account but been browsing the forums for a while.

^ only the 940 and 965 are being discontinued as far as any of us know.

and why would they discontinue the CPU which gives them the most revenue for i7?

1) yes
2) not for a good 2 years apparently.
3) they aren't running out.

i agree with hell...personally i was financially challenged when i went to get mine and i stuck with the 920 which is run a 3.6 anyways....only thing about going cheap is not much OC headroom beyond that

^ only trust Chinese and Taiwnese leaks, and they will stop being produced around 1H 2010 because of the 6 cores, not when i5 comes out because i7 will still have a market with the higher end builders.

No your wrong (according to my source), I didn't say that no I7 will be produced anymore only that the 920/940 will be replaced (not produced anymore)when the lynnfield comes. The Xtreme editions will still continue to be produced (and for a while also the 950) after the release of the Lynnfield and maintain their high end position.

There is no need for an i7 920/940 when the lynnfield can perform equal for lower prices... maybe the realease prices are kind of high but after some time they will dropp and then the I7 920 would be nonsence to buy/produce....

^ except i5 can't keep up for lower prices, look at anandtech's i5 2.66ghz ES benchmark, the i7 920 still wins the majority of the time, and that's the only thing that matters.

I would be careful about leaks in the first place, but i don't think it's going to be as big as you're makign the discontinuing to be

And? If you want high-end performance, Intel is going to make you pay a high-end price for it. Otherwise, its i5.

Those benchmarks are just a preview. Engineering Sample with Immature Motherboard. Wait for the release product and a motherboard with a proper BIOS and I bet those numbers change.

Thanks for the replies so far. Still seems a hard decision. In some ways I want to wait until some definite information is released but am worried that by then there won't be any left.

And sorry for slow response.
