Hey.

I'm planning on ordering a Radeon 4870 512MB next week.

My current setup is an AMD 6000+ 2mb l2 cache with 4GB ram running XP Pro.

I'll need to get a new PSU as mine is 450 watt and if I'm led to believe right to power the 4870 I'll need one with 2 x PCI express 6 pin connectors.

Can anyone recommend a good PSU for the card which does the job without blowing the bank totally that I can get hold of in the UK.

Thanks for any advice, opinions.

Which PSU is it? Some 450W supplies can handle a HD4870. Otherwise look to about 500-550 Watts but from a known manufacturer like Corsair, OCZ, Antec or PC Power and Cooling. Avoid cheap units, there`s a reason they`re cheap.
Prices vary wildly so look around. Here`s a few to check; Overclockers, Scan, CCL,
E-buyer and Eclipse.
And yes, I think they all need two 6-pin connectors, at least mine did.
Expect to pay around 55 to 70 pounds depending on what`s on offer.

Thanks for the reply.

My current PSU has mobo 24 pin and 12 power connectors for the mobo, a sata power lead and a numerous amount for general power to the peripherals so I'll need to get a new one unfortunately.

Thanks for the brand names. I didn't really know which ones are respected makers. I'll have a smooch around and see what I can find.

I had a quick look around and found this one.

I think this would work with it.

It says it has 1 x 6 pin PCI express connector and 1 x 6 + 2 pin PCI express connector.

I don't understand what the 6+2 pin connector is.

I assume it would work as the second connector for a Radeon 4870.

Do you think that's a good buy for the price and would it work with the 4870?

Thanks for any help.

Put it on your shortlist but keep looking, you may yet find a better deal.
The 6+2 is a 6-pin connector that has an additional 2-pin connector that can be clipped to it to turn it into an 8-pin, required by some cards, but not a HD4870.

Antec Earthwatts is a good quality reasonably priced PSU.
