This is my first build and I have ordered everything: so I'm not asking for advice on components, just really confused about the front panel audio connector.. It has a 3.5mm audio jack and a 3.5mm microphone jack coming into the case. Where am I supposed to connect this since my motherboard (gigabyte ga-m57sli) doesn't have this onboard.. will i need to take the wire to the back panel?! that would be crazy

More about : build front panel audio connector

Yes it does.
Read the manual section titled F_Audio (Front Audio Connector). If you haven't already done so download the manual from the Gigabyte website.

How did you happen to choose an older nForce 570 SLI motherboard?

some cases use the 3.5mm jacks for onboard (usually cheap ones). route to backpanel or get a new case. theres no adapter i know of but you might want to use a 3.5mm splitter if you want to use both front and back jacks.

Its a budget build and that is the cheapest SLi motherboard with AM2 socket I could find. you mention F_audio.. so there is a circular hole 3.5mm on the motherboard (Not backpanel) where i can connect the audio?
