All,

I am confused on how to select DDR3 RAM, my MOBO says 6 X DIMM Max 24 GB. My question is how do I select the amount of RAM, for example most DDR3 memory comes in packs of 3, or at least that's what I have seen. So as an example I can get a coarsair 3x2 GB so that would put my total RAM at 6 GB. How many DIMM slots does that take up ? Basically I don't know how the DIMM slots are populated

TIA

If you buy a kit of 3 x 2GB, then it will take 3 slots.

Thanks, so obviously another set would take up all six solts (12GB) so the max rating of 24 GB is obviously for bigger sets of RAM say (3x4GB, if available and two sets maxing out the MOBO). How much ram is enough or overkill ?

What do you do with your system? If playing games or running office applications, then 6 GB definitely is enough.

I will be using this primarily for video file conversion (Blue Ray/DVD to .X264 or .MKV) and some video editing. Games are not really in the works for this machine

few people can use more than 6 gig. Also anything over 4 gig requires a 64bit os.

That's good to know about the 64 bit os as I was unaware of that. Do you have any sources of finding out what RAM is better than the other ?

doesn't really matter unless you plan on some serious overclocking. I usually buy the cheapest muskin I can find. never had a problem and it's usually still in production when customers want to upgrade
