Hi should i change my athlon II 620 to athlon II 645 or would it be worth overclocking the 620. I have tried with a biostar mcp6p3 with no joy 2.8ghz max i manage to get it to. Using the biostar with an older athlon 240 and thats plugging along nicely at stock speed. I purchased an asus ma785td evo off ebay i managed to get the 620 to 3.0ghz by just increasing the fsb by 5 each time. At 3.0ghz windows crashed after 10 minutes stressed by running far cry 2 benchmark.

Most of my games are multithreaded but my older games seem to struggle at 2.6ghz. A 400mhz overclock would do me fine i know at this speed some people can get that without increasing voltages, which i would prefer.

I do kinda like this cpu it plays the latest games and does not bottleneck my ati 5770 so im gonna do a bit more experimenting in the near future and its efficient.

Slow down the RAM speed and rise the FBS a little, test the rig with prime95 2 hours, LinX 1 hour or OCCT 3 hours with that u can know if the rig is stable. If u get it stable rise the FBS more and do the test again.

Ok ill try lowering memory from 1333 to 1066 i tried this on the biostar mcp6p3 and i had no luck. I think i might have better luck with the asus board. thanks.

saint19, I am curious why do you spell it FBS instead of FSB?

Asus board = posibility to unlock the dormant L3 cache if it has any, that would boost it a lot but its rare to a)have it and b)it not being faulty/unstable. But worth a look.

The chip is on a propus die not a deneb core so there is no way i can unlock the L3. Running prime95 at 3.0ghz just under 2 hours it came up with an error.DDR3 Memory was set at 800MHZ , cool n quiet disabled and FSB set at 230, but i noticed voltage was at 1.488v which i didn't adjust originally vcore was 1.33v. Turbo v had the voltage at 1.5v which i didn't use to overclock i used BIOS just using turbo V for reference. So i think the highest i can go is just over 2.9ghz i would have liked to go have gone slightly over 3.0. This is the first time ive oced a non BE amd chip, ive overclocked INTEL E2160 and E5200 before.

Its already disabled, i think im going to invest in new sticks of RAM i have got 2 sticks of budget TARGET i thought by going down to 800MHZ from 1333 would be ok but i think thats where the error might have been. I'm going to stick with the athlon 620 then and try again at a later date thanks for your help.

ive had the same kind of prob with my Athlon ii 640 i could only push it to 3.2 with the fsb only. i had to drop the ram to 403mhz fsb at 242 to get 3.6 ive seen guys with 3.7/3.8 on air ive got water cooling and it crashz all the time at 3.8 im thinkn its my ram to!

i had the same problem but i eventually got my 630 up to 3.7 stable. you are going to have to sacrifice ram speed for the cpu overclock for some reason. what i did was drop my ram to the lowest divider possible and then find my max stable cpu overclock and then proceed to bring the ram up to the highest stable divider. now your ram will be running clower than the spec rating but thats ok because at those lower speed you can tighten your timings and lower the voltage and end up with a faster system than having the ram running at spec speed. and i think i read somewhere that you should disable the turbo thing when you oc your cpu

Ive purchased an asus m4a785td-evo for £45 new off ebay ive had nearly a month which i haven't experimented yet and a phenom 955 for just over £100 off ebuyer. OCZ 1333 with 7-7-7 timings which is running at 1066mhz at the moment 1333 keeps giving me blue screens. The athlon II 620 is my kids pc which is running nicely on an asus m3n78pro and i will have a tinker with that. I have still got the BIOSTAR the only thing missing is a cpu so for a second pc i might get a cheap triple core to go with the cheap memory ive got. I did try using this cheap target memory with the ocz it worked ok for a bit and seemed a little unstable.
