So is it possible to get a good general purpose gaming rig for $800? Can you give me advice on parts to buy? Please note that for me, online stores are mostly out, and that I do not live in the US/Canada. I am thinking of a triple-core Phenom II with a 790GX AM2+ mobo (DDR3 is really, really overpriced round here) with a ATI HD 4770 because it is,from what I have heard, cheap, quiet, and quite fast with maximum bang for buck. Or should I go Intel? I know core I7 is out of reach for me and they are not making new procs for LGA775. So is it good to go over to AMD for upgradebility?

There are a million "help me build a system" threads, just use the search feature and read some. I think your general ideas are good and if you were to go with a crossfire board you would leave the door open for 4770 crossfire which performs very well. I would stay away from the socket 775 due to it being a dead end but the same can be said for DDR2. I think your on the right track though.

Most definitely,800 dollars should get you the 720 BE,4 gigs of ddr 3 ram at 1333mhz,at least the 4850 (when i built mine i was still able to get the 4870) and a 500 gb hard drive,i would try and get the best possible graphics card though and normally 800 dollars should cover it
