Ok, I've got Windows Movie Maker and Windows Movie Encoder now and I'm able
to do a lot with them. However, I can't seem to find a truly free converter
for .mov files. All of them seem to want $30 to do this. All I have a single
file that I want to convert and I was hoping for a free solution. Has anyone
found one?

Rad Video tools (free, donate if you like it) is the only thing I have to
convert .mov, converts to AVI not WMV, so you will have to do two
conversions if you insist on using WMV on your device. It seems to convert
most .MOV files, but not all - in some cases it can do video but not audio.

Ok. Cool. Do you know what settings I should use to get it in an avi format
that Windows Media Encoder will convert to mwv? There are a ton of settings
on the main screen and then I'm guessing the most important one to choose
correctly is the codec. I've tried the default and a codec called Windows
Media Video and WME won't recognize it.

I use Rad tools to convert my Kodak camera .mov generated files.
I leave the default settings and use the Full Frames (uncompressed) option
in the codec selection. This makes for large files, but then i convert those
avi files to a windows media format, then just delete the avi files.

You're right, you don't need to touch any of the settings in the Convert
window for a straight format conversion, just click Convert and select a
codec.
I usually use the Huffyuv codec (lossless but big files) to preserve quality
in such conversions, WME seems to mostly deal with that fine. WME seems to
be very picky about codecs, and will bomb out on files that almost anything
else, including Windows Movie Maker, deal with fine. One of the reasons I
try to avoid using WME.

I tried uncompressed and WME wouldn't recognize it. I ended up using
"Microsoft Video 1" codec, which worked but the quality stinks due to the
double-conversion from mov->avi->wmv. I will try the uncompressed again
since you have it working.

WME didn't like that HuffyUV codec. I'm not sure why it works for you but
not me. I can get Microsoft Video 1 codec to work, but the quality stinks.
BTW, I forget when this thread started if I mentioned I'm using Rad Video
tools to convert the .mov to .avi, then WME of course to go from .avi to
..wmv.
