I assume you have some sort of USB hard drive. Did you try to connect it to your PC via a different USB port? If not, power down the drive and move to another port. Power back on and try again. Also, have you tried another USB cable between the drive and your computer?
Product we purchased. An Iomega Hellium.
Having the same problem. When we plug into computer it doesn't register.
However, when we use disk utility, it sees the HD connected.
We are trying not to reformat because of the contents on HD.
using a different cable cord.

and tried connecting to the old macbook it was originally purchased for.
Is there a way to open the shell and reset or reboot the HD motherboard inside?
Any advice on what to try would be exceptional and greatly appreciated.
