What socket cooler for my weird mobo?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone could help me find out what cooler will fit my motherboard. Here it is on HP's website: http://tinyurl.com/ysogxs

I know it says AM2 but if you look at the picture there isn't a latch for the cooler to connect to. Instead there are four screw holes, can someone tell me if any cpu coolers will fit on there, because at the moment I only have a heatsink :S

Many Thanks,

Ben.

Ok, that's just creepy. There should be a bracket around the CPU like in this one:

Well, the only reason I'm asking is because im transferring to a new case and I need a new cpu cooler. It would seem that the bracket isn't on my motherboard, would I be able to get one anywhere? Somewhere must sell one ;) Thanks for the quick reply!

I've looked for AM2 brackets, and it would appear that the screws to hold them in are in a rectangular shape, where as the screw holes in my mobo are like in a square shape :S I've seen that some intel coolers use screws in a square shape, could I use them? Sorry if you don't have a clue what I'm on about :p

Looks like that board does use the socket 775 fitting. An AM2/3 bracket definitely wouldn't fit on there as you say because the mount holes on the AM2 are layed out in a rectangle - not a square like this one.
If you take a look here: http://gs92.photobucket.com/groups/l22/D5CAKEONZS/
that guy has used a S775 cooler on his A8MN-BR so I think you will need to buy one that is 775 compatable.
Wierd indeed - never seen that before - although I guess they did it to save space as a AM2/3 bracket would have covered part of the northbridge area and the space where the caps are to the left of the CPU socket.
So yes, go for one of the square coolers, one that says it supports socket 775.

Thanks so much! I had a hunch that maybe an Intel cooler would fit as I knew they used screws in a square layout. I will certainly try and get my hands on a 775 cooler. I'm a bit annoyed now though because I've discovered that I need a 24 to 20 pin adapter as the power cable to the mobo is too big :/ Hopefully I'll have my desktop up and running soon. Thanks again :D

(p.s THESE FORUMS RULE!)

You shouldn't need to buy any adaptor, most PSUs have a detachable 4 pin section on the mobo power connector, but if yours doesn't you can just let the extra four pins hang off the side. It will only go in one way due to the shapes of the pins so theres little chance of you getting it wrong (unless you really force it in there!!) Looks like the extra 4 pins would hang off to the right of the socket if you are looking at the motherboard straight on as in the pics above.

Well if you look at the pins on the board (pic above) and compare it to a normal 20 pin cable from an ATX power supply, you'll find that the socket in the board is more compact and are much closer together. I have changed my power supply as I'm putting everything in a new case, and my old psu used a much smaller 20 pin cable. It's strange because you can see they are the same cables, just my old psu's 20 pin lead was a lot smaller at the end.

Here's a pic to explain it easier:

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/8678/dsc08491g.jpg

As you can see, the pins on my old psu 20 pin cable (below) are much closer together than the standard psu (above).

Is there an adapter which will sort this for me, or do I just need a new mobo, bearing in mind I would really prefer to get an adapter because I'm quite short of $$$ :p

Anyone who can find an adapter and post me a link to one will be the love of my life. Thanks, Ben

*EDIT*

I just realised there are 24 pins on my old psu so i'm starting to think that I need a new mobo :(

I WANNA PLAY COUNTER-STRIKE!!!(rage)

Thanks for this thread. I was scratching my head to figure out the heatsink and fan to use. You have confirmed my suspicion that it was an Intel one needed.
