I have an old Gateway D845VH machine with a P4 1.5 GHz 256 400 FSB processor. Can I replace that chip with a P4 2.6 GHz 512 800 FSB? Those chips are available for <$20. I can find the 2.6 512 400 chip, but they are around $100. Can I "underclock" the 800 FSB processor?
I suggest for a whole new build overall, its not really worth $100. You could be getting a way nicer CPU for a $100. a Intel E5200 could easily out perform that 1.5Ghz P4. I don't think that a 800MHz FSB chip will work on a a motherboard that supports 400FSB, usually there are 400MHz/533Mhz motherboards. No you cannot underclock the 800MHz chip (or so I think....)
You will need to go with the 400mhz chip as your Mobo only supports that max CPU FSB. $100 is a rather large amount to pay for years old performance, bet you could pick up a whole better p4 system based on northwood on ebay for $100
Like the others have said it's not worth it.That system would be useful as a Linux box though. It's worth so little that I got 8 Pentium 4 systems for free and gave away 3 of them to friends. You're much better off getting (building a custom system is better) a newer system even if it's an el cheapo budget system.
