Hi All,
I have an older Alienware Aurora 7500 with a 939 Opteron 185, and the old Asus A8n-Sli Deluxe. The rest of the hardware isn't necessary for my question.
So, the problem is with the 2 blue cathode lights that came in the front part of the case; they don't light up. I never had any blue light shining through there, and I never looked, simply becuase I didn't know I was supposed to have them. I know, huge fail on my part. But, I'm not a huge Modder or anything, so no big deal.
Now we get to the point. I took the case apart a bit to make some upgrades and do some interior maintenance. (dusting, etc.) While doing that I noticed the 2 cathodes hidden nicely in the curve between the plastic front grill and the metal part of the case. So, this got me to wondering why I have never had any blue lights if the things were there?
I traced all the wires from the cathodes to what I guess is a kind of balast and to the power supply. The wires go through a 2 position switch and then on to the power supply. Of the 3 pins on the switch there are only 2 being used: a red and a yellow wire. THe red goes to a red pin from a molex connector, and the middle yellow wire connects to a yellow pin on a molex connector. The 3rd pin has nothing on it. I just figured there wasn't supposed to be one as I couldn't locate a black wire with no home anywhere. Also, the switch would only need to be closed for light or open for no light. I didn't think a 3rd wire is necessary.
Anyway, I have no blue light. I move the switch to the side where it's making the connection to the red and yellow... nothing. And nothing when it's in the other position.
Any1 have experience with this issue? I'd call Alienware but last time I tried to call them on something they told me I'd have to re-up for a new service contract for them to even TALK to me on the phone at all. They probably wouldn't even answer a "how's the weather where you are" type of question. Lame lame lame.
Any help on this would be appreciated. If not, I'll survive. I just thought it'd be interesting to get at least a glimpse at what the system was supposed to look like all this time; I'm pretty much at the end of expandability with this system. It's been good to me, just out of date.
Sorry for the ranting. Thx for any help at all.
