we have an older Vantech external SATA - can we use the newer SATA 3 Drives in this unit? Is the connection interface the same for all SATA drives?

Tell the group a little more about your hardware so everyone can think about it accurately.

What is the model # or your Vantec enclosure, if it has an internal SATA interface or an IDE interface to connect the drive to the enclosure, and if the connection from enclosure to compouter is a USB 2 connection, IEEE 1394, or e-Sata connection.

To just answer your question, all the SATA connections are standard Sata 1, 2, 3. The drives are backward compatible, so they can be connected to an earlier version controller port and will function at the slowest component speed.

If I understand correctly you have a USB enclosure that takes SATA hard drives... If that's the case you shouldn't really have a problem connecting any SATA drive. There won't be any huge performance improvements though. Negligible if anything...
